Things left in the moon in the first expedition there, and the Tranquility Base.
2. What things are threatening it?
The Nasa wanted to send astronauts and Russia and India wanted to send robotic landers to the moon. That is why there is an idea to protect the elements there.
3. What has been done so far to protect it?
The Nasa wanted to protect these place, they don’t want knew expeditions to destroy it. They will send astronauts there to protect the things left in the moon.
4. Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case?
I think is good to preserve things left in the moon, but I also have the idea that no one has the right to forbid other expeditions to get closer to those places in the moon. The agree they did before has to be obey.
5. Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not?
I think if they left those things in the moon, it is because they don’t need them anymore, so if they want to protect them they should leave them in another place. I think the moon is not supposed to have human thing in there.

The ‘ecce homo’ a fresco of Jesus before his crucifixion.
2. What things are threatening it?
Time and also people. I mean Ms. Giménez that with a good intention, finally destroyed the fresco.
3. What has been done so far to protect it?
I think nothing, because in the church they left that woman to do the restoration to an important fresco even if they were not chore she will do a good restoration. They wanted to take legal actions against that old woman.
4. Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case?
No, because if you want to protect thing or restore it, it must be done by a specialist, or even you can put someone protecting the fresco, like a guard or also with a glass protection. Is not a good idea to put a fresco with that importance without any protection.
5. Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not?
I think for catholic people it is very important to preserve it, they made a mistake, and I think it is too late to fix the error the woman did. Also it is very important to their culture to preserve art.

They create a list for the best 10 video games, they will add that list to the Library of congress.
4. Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case?
I think it is difficult to preserve videogames in that way, because they depend of the library and I am not sure if people can play there. It is important to preserve videogames, and also are important know just as before.
5. Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not?
I think it is important to preserve them, but if there is a lot of people that enjoy playing with them, they must do something too, like a place where people can go to know old and new videogames
Mali City Rankled by Rules for Life in Spotlight
1. What exactly is endangered in this story?
Djenne’s people and their mud-bricks buildings.
2. What things are threatening it?
People is threatening themselves. They want to progress and it is not permitted to do that. Because those buildings are very old and with an historical importance.
3. What has been done so far to protect it?
They were restored to preserve their structures. But people don’t want to live in those conditions.
4. Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case?
I think it is not fear to preserve a place where people live, they should have the right to change some things if they want to.
5. Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not?
it should be preserve but they should let people to participate in that preservation, it means to let them have an opinion of what they want to change, not just say that it is not permitted.

it is important because language I think is the most important thing in culture.

I think the ideas of the museums both (videogames and the things for the moon)are the best way to get people closer to those thing and finally preserve them. i also agree about the duty of the church to be more careful

"If people wanted to preserve those elements, they should have brought them to the earth in order to have them in a museum." bastian I agree with you, because after all these items are just things that people left behind in a mission to the moon. If people want these things for them they probably have them in a museum where everyone could see them.

"Young people are more interested in new music styles, and they are not paying attention to what they have in their land." you are right sebaalliu. It is a very sad reality, which I think is a consequence of the globalization. It is not bad to like the new music styles (indeed it contributes to the musical richnes), but traditinal music should not be left behind.

Preserving the Passion of India’s Roots Music
What exactly is endangered in this story?
The traditional music of the Manganiyars, which are songs devotionals as well as stories of births, deaths, love and hindu families. What things are threatening it?. The thing that people who practice this traditions are getting old and they don’t have others to continue with this oral traditions. Young people is not interested in this tradition and they prefer to listen modern music.
What has been done so far to protect it? They want to make a tour in which Manganiyars will sing and perfom their musicin front of people showing it. They want to preserve it making it more popular in the actually.
Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case? It’s a good strategy to protect this tradition. I cant visualize complications because its something that people will be very enthuastic to support. Also, people in charge are very conscious about what they are doing and society is engaged with all subjects related to music.
Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not? Traditions which are related to our ancestors are very important and the cost, whichever it is, is worthy to pay a high cost. People must know about their origins and this type of traditions help to not forget about it.
Despite Good Intentions, a Fresco in Spain Is Ruined
What exactly is endangered in this story? The ecce homo or behold the man, which was paint by Elias Garcia Martinez in 1930, is in the Sanctuary of Mercy church in Borja Zaragoz. What things are threatening it?
The Ecco homo was threatening by the passing of the time. A woman called Cecilia, tried to restore the fresco but she made a huge disaster with the paint and now is considering like a failed restoration. Also she was a danger for the paint.
What has been done so far to protect it? People of the church tried to do something about Fresco and its restoration. A woman called Cecilia Gimenez took the challenge and tried to fix the Fresco, but she failed. Actually she ruined the paint. Finally the authorities will take some legal actions against Cecilia because of the mess she caused.
Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case? Its not a realistic strategy for protecting, in this particulary case, the ecco homo. If someone want to take the risk to modify something that another person did it in the past, that person has to know how the author of the “thing” works. One of the complication is, in this specific case, to modify the paint but lost the meaning of it in the process. Cecilia tried to do it but she changed the image of Jesus to a monkey. The message is not the same as the origin of the paint. Also, she wasn’t an expert in restitutions.
Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not?
No, It’s not worth. I’m against to modify paints of others. I believe that is very disrespectful to the author. If someone wants to protect the art, its fine, but restore something is not a good idea, because things like happened with the Ecco Homo can continue happening. Also, is rude to take a work from another person and do some changes with the intention to “preserve it” it’s not logical.
Is That Just Some Game? No, it’s a Cultural Artifact
What exactly is endangered in this story?
Video games like Spacewar! (1962), Star Raiders (1979), Zork (1980), Tetris (1985), SimCity (1989), Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990), Civilization I/II (1991), Doom (1993), Warcraft series (beginning 1994) and Sensible World of Soccer (1994) and video-game artifacts.
What things are threatening it? One of the things that are risky to video games is the technology. It’s dangerous because we usually forget about things that they were created in the past and we focus on new things, for example new ways to play video-games like the emulators.
What has been done so far to protect it?
Henry Lowood had the idea to preserve some video games which were a huge boom at their time and some game artifacts that they usually used to play them. He believed that video games were something with an historical worth preserving. They want to create a list in which they will write the names of the most important video games at that time with the intention to preserve them through the past of time.
Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case? It’s a good way to protect it from the passing of time. It’s not hard to do it. Experts in this area can deal with this challenge and achieve it without any complications. Technology nowadays has important progress and the preservation of video games is not complicated.
Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not? I don’ believe that this is a good thing to work with. I believe that are things more important to preserve than this one. Video games are cool and everybody loves them, but the fact that give them so much importance is not something that I would do.
Mali City Rankled by Rules for Life in Spotlight
What exactly is endangered in this story? The mud-brick buildings, from the Great Mosque. The architectural style, known as Sudanese, is native to the Sahel.
What things are threatening it? They cannot restyle those buildings in order to set up to used them as a places to live.
What has been done so far to protect it? Djenee said that they can restyl the buildings using the right materials without compromising the architectural values but they can’t do anything about it.
Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case?
No, it is not worth it. People need a better place to live and because of this fanaticism to preserve those buildings, they are suffering.
Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not?
No, because a lot of people are suffering and they need to restyle those places in order to have better life conditions. It’s true that those types of buildings are unique but the life of others is a more important issue to worried about than ancient architectures.
Tribe Revives Language on Verge of Extinction
What exactly is endangered in this story? A language called Siletz Dee-in which is spoke by a few natives.
What things are threatening it?
One of the dangers are that almost nobody speak this language. Another thing is the lake of knowledge of people about the existence of it.
What has been done so far to protect it? Bud Lane, which is a tribe member, created an online dictionary about Siletz Dee-in language. He hopes that people start learning this language and using it as well.
Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case? It’s a very interesting way to protect this ethnic language. The most important complication is that they only exist a few natives who speak the language and they are the only one who can actually spread the word to the others about their language. People usually feel interested about this kind of matters because it’s a common interest to preserve native language and everybody wants to know about their origins.
Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not? Yes, it is worth. Because like I said before, it’s something related to our past, our origins and we have to do everything that we can to preserve it.
To Preserve History on the Moon, Visitors Are Asked to Tread Lightly
What exactly is endangered in this story? The objects that men left in the expedition to the moon and the signs of that historical moment that they want to preserved during time.
What things are threatening it? People want to go there and some countries want to send a robot landers. Both of those case are a huge risk to people who wants to preserve the objects and signs of the first arrival to the moon.
What has been done so far to protect it?
Nasa is making a call to have conscious about the importance of the historical things that are in the moon. Also, they are planning to do something about it with the intention to protect those historical signs.
Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case?
I don’t think that this will be a realistic strategy to protect the objects that men used at that time. The complications that they have to deal with are related to the interested of the government and the fact that missions like this one have a huge cost of money. Also, it’s a big risk to take without thinking about it more than one time.
Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not?
If you ask me, I’m disagree with the things that they want to do and the cost that those things cost. I believe that are things more important than go to the moon, waste all that amount of money to save the memories of something that we don’t know if they are true.

rafaelanriquez, I do not think that everything we have created must be in a museum. There are other ways to remember and learn about past things. I think that videogames are important but not that much, their story just need to be available if someone wants to know more about them. Just like I said, we are focus on the new technology and we do not have interest in how it was before. I disagree with you Felipe Muñoz, they think that those footprints and those artifacts that stayed thee would loose significance if they take them away from the moon. One of the reasons of doing all of this is that the americans want their belongings to stay there. I know they want it. However, They're not the owners of the moon and don't have the right to do it. What I mean for taking those things to a museum in their country is giving them an option for I'm not in agreement to what they are doing. If they value them as something important, they should take it home to take care of them. For me is like spending too much efforts in something that is not worth for. Felipe has a point there. By the other hand if they want to preserve the famous foodprints, they have the technology to do it. They dont have the right to safe their stuffs in the moon. On the other hand, I believe that they will waste a huge amount of money if they go to the moon only because they want to preserve those things.

The idea of mixing Manganiyar music with the music of today is also very good because it allows new generations to know it.
Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not? It is worth to preserve. More tan music it is part of history, and history must preserve over time no matter what.

Their action was irresponsible because they didn't employ an specialist to restore the paint. If they were really commited to it, they would take a better decision and hire some with experience.

I think that young people have more conscious about the importance of these things than a few years before.

| What exactly is endangered in this story?
| What things are threatening it?
| What has been done so far to protect it?
| Is that a realistic strategy for protecting this thing, and what are the complications – the factors that could make preservation difficult in this case? 0-5 pts.
| Is it worth preserving at all, or at the cost? Why or why not? 0-5 pts.
| A1 | Traditional music from Manganiyars, inherited from Muslim musicians.
| Modern Bollywood music and disinterest from Indian younger generations, also Manganiyars musicians are growing older.
| Mr. Malhotra and Mr. Sharma tried to go to a studio to convince them to record Manganiyar music. They traveled across Indi to record themselves Manganiyar music, after the studios told them that the music was no commercial.
| I think it is a realistic strategy, a difficult task to achieve, but certainly (according to the reading) it worked out. The complications are its difficult to convince a label to provide a studio to record music that is not commercial. That´s why they did it for themselves.
| It is worthy because they are trying to save a piece of their culture that is being ignored. Save that root of their traditional music is important because in some ways it defines their culture.
| A2 | The historical integrity of an important piece of art (Ecce homo) of the Santuario de la Misericordia’s church.
| The pass of the years eventually has done changes on the painting, but Ms. Giménez was the real threat at the end.
| Borja authorities are working along with historians to try to fix the painting.
| Obviously what Ms. Geménez did wasn’t accurate, but the strategy was the right one. One factor that could play a role in making difficult the preservation is vandalism.
| Nobody saw coming what Ms. Giménez did, but it totally worth to preserve such an important piece of art and history.
| A3 | The social importance of the effect of videogames in human history. (if I can make my own supposition)
| It doesn’t really say on the reading. But it names the emulators as a copyright law breaker, it goes against the conventional use of a console, for it can be played on any computer. It devalues the game.
| Mr. Lowood and some coworkers created the game canon. It’s a way to protect the videogames, they name yearly 10 games worthy to be preserve.
| I think the game canon is a good idea to preserve videogames. Form my “gamer” point of view I agree that videogames became part of the culture of some people, they marked some stages in my life so I totally support the preservation of videogames. A factor that can make difficult their preservation are the emulator; since they can be played from different platforms (computers, smartphones, consoles) it devalues the integrity of the videogame itself.
| It’s not totally worthy because they are easy to reprogram. You are able to play videogames on different platforms, so it would be easier on the future to have access to videogames, you will play it a different joystick, but still the same fun.
| A4 | A mud palace (like a big sand castle) Mali.
| The infrastructure; as it is made of mud, the castle has to be repair every certain time, and is an old structure still in usage.
| It is officially a world heritage site in Male, but UNESCO says that it has been altered, and it damages the original structure.
| It is difficult to say. The structure is made of mud and is really old, the idea of its attractive is that is made of mud, so changing the structure damages its rustic beauty, but if it is not restores it will eventually fall apart anyways.
| It is totally worth to preserve such amazing mood castle, is really beautiful and unique. It could fall apart if there is any modification done on the structure, but it could still be repaired and get strengthen.
| A5 | Siletz, an old language spoken by some tribes.
| Globalization of the most common languages like English and Spanish. Also the geographical distance between the tribes that speaks Siletz. And the extinction on the language itself.
| A dictionary is been created and a network of people that speaks the language. There are also projects to make a teaching program to teach the language where it originated.
| It is a good strategy, having a network of people that can speak the language. On factor against the goal of preserve the language (and use it) is that English and Spanish (Mandarin too, but Asia is totally like another world) are getting global, those are the two main languages that are being used today for communication between people that don´t speak the same mother language.
| If it as a considerable amount of people that still speaks the language and another considerable amount of people that wants to lo learn the language then it will be worth to preserve.
| A6 | The integrity of any human track on the surface of the moon.
| Possible landing on the moon, either robotic or human.
| They want to the Tranquility Base under protection to preserve probably the most significant human achievement.
| It is realistic and possible, to state a law that prevents people or machines (robots, spaceships) from alter the conditions of the Tranquility Base or any other human track on the moon. The factors that could prevent the achievement of this goal are future space travels to the moon, and any other damage that could be done from human or non-human life.
| I think that reaching the moon is the greatest human achievement, so it is totally worth to preserve the Tranquility Base on the moon, or any other sigh that proves that humans walked on the moon.
